100 Club
For £1 a month, parents purchase a number for the 100 Club. Each month, members? numbers are entered into a draw and a lucky winner is picked. 49% of the total entry fees for that month are distributed as a prize, with the remainder going to the school. Draws take place in the playground on the last Friday of every month apart from August.
Bag2School
Parents are asked to fill plastic bags with unwanted clothes, shoes etc and bring them to school on a nominated day. A company then collects the bags and the school receives funds based on the total weight of the collection. Therefore the more bags we collect, the more money we raise.
Bottle Stall
At the Xmas Fayre & Summer Fun Day, we have a bottle stall. Normally on a ?Mufti Day? (see over), we ask parents to donate a bottle; this can be anything from tomato sauce to white wine or even Champagne! The bottles are all placed on the Bottle Stall with tickets attached, whoever picks the winning numbers out of the bucket, wins the bottle with that number.
Celebrations Assembly
This is a special assembly that takes place once a term. Prior to the event, children take in awards that they have received during activities outside of school e.g. swimming, dancing, karate etc and the children are called up on stage to collect the award in front of the whole school and celebrate their achievement. On some occasions children perform and parents are invited to watch the assembly.
Class Organisation
There are four year groups in the school, called Foundation 1, Foundation 2, Year 1 and Year 2. There are four classes in each Year Group. See entries for each year group.
Creche & Creche Room
Bedgrove Infant School finishes at 3pm but the Junior School finishes half an hour later. Therefore, the Infant School runs a crèche from 3pm to 3.30pm to allow parents with children at both Schools to only have to come to school once rather than twice to pick up their children. It costs 50p per day and is totally independent to Grover Club. As you enter the school through the main entrance, follow the corridor around to the right and it is the large carpeted room on the right.
Easter Hat Parade
All children are asked to make an Easter Hat at home. Parents are invited to watch the parade (weather permitting) and a girl and boy winner is chosen from each class by a group of independent judges and they are given a rosette.
Foundation 1 or F1
This is the first or Nursery year group, for 4-5 year olds, and has its own entrance. Although there are four classes within the year group, they do not have separate names like the older year groups. All the classes are simply known as F1. Foundation 1 has a separate curriculum to the other year groups and F1 children do not participate in all of the group school activities, although parents and carers of F1 children are very welcome to do so!
Foundation 2 or F2
Foundation 2 (previously called Reception) has 4 classes which are named after the first letter of the teacher?s surname, eg F (for foundation 2) + L (for Longmate) = FL.
Grover Club
This is a before and after school club run completely independently of the school.
High Frequency Words
Words used very frequently that can make up basic sentences. E.g. I, go, come etc.
Home Guide
Information booklet issued by the school at the beginning of each term. The guide includes topic outlines & rotations, spelling (Year 1 & 2 only) and general information. The main idea behind the guide is to provide parents with suggestions for activities to do at home, which allow parents and children to explore topics that are linked to the curriculum.
Hot Dog Day
Normally at the end of each term, the children are offered hot dogs or a vegetarian option for lunch instead of their sandwich. A form is sent out a few weeks prior to the event when hot dogs are ordered and paid for. They are not offered to Foundation 1, as they do not stay at school for lunch.
Ice Skating
A company converts the hall into an ?ice rink? with synthetic matting. Children, accompanied by an adult, wear authentic skates and skate on the ?ice? for 1-hour time slots. This event is not available to Foundation 1 children due to safety issues.
Indulgence Evening
Ladies & gentlemen are invited to an evening of pampering by qualified beauty therapists & specialist therapists including Reiki, holistic massage, manicures etc. There are also stalls selling jewellery, beauty products, etc.
Jam Jars
At the Christmas Fayre & Summer Fun Day, we have a jam jar stall. We ask parents to collect empty jars (it can be any type of jar) and fill them with sweets or treats and bring them to school on the run up to the fayre. At the fayre, the children pick raffle tickets out of a bucket; if they get an even numbers they can choose a jam jar.
Jolly Phonics
Jolly Phonics is a thorough foundation for reading and writing. It teaches the letter sounds in an enjoyable, multisensory way, and enables children to use them to read and write words. In Jolly Phonics the 42 main sounds of English are taught, not just the alphabet. The sounds are in seven groups. Some sounds are written with two letters, such as ee and or. These are called digraphs. Note that oo and th can each make two different sounds, as in book and moon, that and three. This is why the letters are taught in the order of s, a, t etc and not a, b, c.
Letters to Santa
At the beginning of December, parents can complete a form with their child?s details including names of pets and siblings etc and return it to the school. ?Santa? then writes a personalised letter to the child, which they receive through the Royal Mail.
Match Funding
Some companies, e.g. HboS, ANBS offer match funding. If an employee of a participating company helps at a charity event, the employee can apply to their company to match the amount of money raised, normally up to a maximum of £500.

Children are allowed to wear their own clothes to school in return for a donation to a nominated charity or sometimes a bottle (see Bottle Stall).
?Nearly New? Uniform Shop
Parents kindly donate unwanted uniform to the PTA and on the first Wednesday of every month, the uniform is available for sale in the playground after school. There are often great bargains to be found.
Pennies in the Playground
On the same day as the Easter Hat Parade, children can bring a small bag of loose change into school and they put their coins on the painted lines in the playground in an attempt to cover all the lines. Parents then sweep up the coins and they are counted and donated to the school.
Quiz Night
Teams of 8 people, (don?t worry if you can?t make up a full team, we put smaller groups together) take part in a quiz that is organised in the evening. A ?fish & chip supper? is included in the price of a ticket and normally there is a licensed bar.
Race Night
We commission a company to come to the school at an appointed evening, where they arrange the Race Night. Parents and friends buy tickets to attend the evening, which includes a fish & chip supper and during the evening they can bet on horse races that are shown on a big screen. There is normally at licensed bar at this event.
School Disco
The discos are available to all children in the school. They normally take place at Christmas & the end of the summer term. There are normally 2 discos on the same evening, one for F1 & F2 and a slightly later disco for Year 1 & Year 2.
Year 1 and Year 2
Year 1 and Year 2 each have four classes which are named after the first letter of the teacher?s surname, eg 1 (for Year 1) + K (for Knapper) = 1K. Where 2 teachers have a surname beginning with the same letter, their first name is also used eg Mr B Grace = 1BG and Mrs J Gurney = 1JG.
Yellow Moon
The PTA distribute ?Yellow Moon? catalogue three times a year. If parents purchase any items from the catalogue and quote our special code (SBE1282), the school receives a percentage donation from Yellow Moon.
