Dear Parents,

Attached to this letter is our annual questionnaire for parents/carers to complete for your views to be considered so that we can all work together to benefit your child’s education.  Last year, alongside very positive comments, you commented on communication between home and school concerning your child’s progress.  We introduced ‘drop ins’ each first Monday of the month (next one May 12th ), open afternoons/mornings each half term to look at your child’s work and active daily communication diaries, as well as annual reports, termly discussions with your child’s teacher(s) and availability of staff before or after school.  We would appreciate you taking the time to complete the questionnaire and return the completed copy to school.

Staffing

Mrs Hannah Grace will begin her maternity leave on Friday 23rd May.  Mrs Scarlett Peacock is working alongside Mrs Grace this half term and will be the class teacher from 2nd June.  Mrs Bennett will continue as FG’s teaching assistant.

In Year 2, Mrs Rachel Berry and Miss Amelia Nelson, PGCE trainees will be teaching alongside the teachers in 2M and 2K respectively.

Equality and Diversity Action Plan from Amanda Buchanan

Recent legislation passed by Government, now places a specific duty on all schools to produce an Equality and Diversity Action Plan, to illustrate how the school will meet their general duties.  At Bedgrove Infant School we would like to set up an Equality Working Group which will meet to develop and implement our school’s Action Plan.  This working group should be representative of disabled parents/carers within the school community, teachers, senior management and relevant governors and pupils.

I envisage that the group will meet once a term at present and at the first meeting a full briefing will be given to all members as to what the legal obligations are and how we intend to best meet them.  If you are interested can you attend an information meeting on Thursday 8th May at 7.30pm in school.  The first meeting of the Equality Working Group will be held on Thursday 15th May at 7.30pm in school.  If you would like any further information please contact me by e mail re your availability at Amanda.buchanan1@ntlworld.com or call on 01296-423969.

If you would like to read the statutory legislation regarding this before the meeting I recommend you look over:  the Code of Practices for Disability, Gender and Race which can be found at www.eoc.org.uk (iii) www.cre.org.uk.

Hot Weather

Children are encouraged to wear Summer uniform during the warmer months ie purple and white dresses or grey shorts.  Shoes must be sensible.  No jelly shoes, trainers, strappy or heeled sandals.  Sun hats, clearly named, must be brought to school daily.  These can be purchased from the school office.  Suntan cream / lotion will not be applied at school, so please ensure you liberally apply the suntan cream / lotion to your child before they come to school.  Sunglasses should not be worn unless for medical conditions.

Foundation 1 Sports Day will be held on Wednesday 21st May.  Morning Nursery will be at 10.30am and Afternoon Nursery will be at 2.00pm.  Children need to come to school wearing a T shirt in their team colours ie the colour of their group and appropriate footwear ie trainers.  Everybody is welcome to come and watch!

Dear Parents,

Thank you for your support on Sports Day before half term, weren’t we lucky with the weather.  It was an enjoyable morning for all concerned.

We would like to apologise for the problem with the back gate on Tuesday morning.  Unfortunately vandals had put a padlock on it which was not easy to remove until we obtained an angle grinder, this meant that some parents and children had to walk round to the front gate.

You will notice that we have some exciting new equipment in the back playground.  This will provide the children with different opportunities for physical exercise and creativity as they can change the structures to suit their activities.  Children must be supervised whilst they are using the equipment and this will be done by the adults in school, including Mr Hatton and Mr Andrews during some lunchtimes.

Please will you make sure that your children do not go on the equipment before or after school when you are waiting in the playground.

Year 2 / Year3 Multi Skills Day

It’s that time of year again and the Grange students have organised our annual Multi Skills Day for PE which will be on Tuesday 10th June.  This will be an all day event on the Bedgrove Junior School Playing Field.  Students from the Grange and teachers from both Bedgrove Junior and Bedgrove Infant School will be present.  Please ensure that your child comes to school with a sun hat and sun cream applied if appropriate.  Children will wear school PE Kit so please ensure this is in school.  Children will need packed lunches as usual and will take their school water bottles with them to use during the day.  This Multi Skills Day is a fun day and will give the children an opportunity to meet some of the Year 3 teachers before they transfer to Bedgrove Junior School .

Headlice

We have had outbreaks of head lice in school.  Can you check your child’s hair.  The Health Authority advise preventory treatment ie combing your child’s hair weekly after applying a thick covering of conditioner.  Please remember all members of the family should be treated if one member is found to have head lice.

Reports

You will be receiving your child’s annual report in July (Year 1 and Year 2).  We are trying a new format this year which we hope you will find informative and we would welcome your comments on it.

Celebrations Assembly

This will take place on Wednesday 16th July starting at 9.15 a.m.  Please bring any trophies, medals and certificates to your class teacher and make sure that each item is labelled with your child’s name and class.  All awards must be brought into school by 3.00 p.m. on Monday 14th July 2008.  If your child wishes to perform and their coach or tutor is willing to say anything about the activities in which your child is involved, then please let Mrs Wreglesworth know.

Should you feel it necessary to talk to any teachers about your child’s report them please make an appointment with the class teacher.  The report this year is a new format and we would greatly appreciate your views on it.  Can we remind you that for Years 1 and 2 the progress (as indicated by the crosses in boxes) is relative to the set, 1 2 or 3, in which your child has been working for Literacy and Numeracy.  We are always looking at the most accurate and informative way we can share your child’s achievements with you and we hope that this is reflected in these summative reports.

Celebration’s Assembly.

Please do not forget, especially our Year 2 children for whom this will be their last at Bedgrove Infant School , the Celebration’s Assembly on Wednesday 16th July starting at 9.10 a.m.  All certificates, medals and cups must be given to your class teacher by the close of school on Monday 14th July.  Should your child wish to perform or the coach/teacher of your child’s sport or interest wishes to come into school to talk, then please let Mrs Wreglesworth know.  There are still certificates and trophies sent in without children’s full names and classes marked on them.  Please will you make sure all items are named, including badges as we have ever growing numbers submitted which is very encouraging but very difficult to collate without clear labelling of name and class.

Congratulations to Zara Buchanan, Caralie Matheson, Megan Gill and Chloe Makepeace who were the winners of our litter bin competition.  Thank you to all the entrants of the competition.  The standard was very high and the Judges had difficult choices to make.  Prizes will be distributed during Celebrations Assembly.  The bins are works of art around our school.

Dear Parents

As we end this academic year we would like to wish all the children leaving us great success in their future schooling and a very big thank you to parents for all their support during this last year.  A special thank you to the parents who have spent time in school supporting children’s learning in various ways

Many congratulations to Hannah and Barry Grace on the safe arrival of Evan George on Thursday 10th July weighing 7lbs 5ozs.  Mr and Mrs Grace are at home this week enjoying the new addition to their family.  Mrs Thomas will be teaching 1E this week and Mr Grace will be returning on Monday 23rd July.

Library and Reading Books

Please could all children return their library and reading books to school by Friday to enable our annual audit to take place.

During the holiday please continue to share books with your child, practising their reading and listening skills with real books.  Holiday diaries will support your child’s writing skills.

Governors Report

The Governors met again on 2nd July.  During the meeting we looked at how well the school had achieved the areas for development it had set itself over the last year.  These targets included improving literacy in the school, promoting health and well-being of children and staff and improving communication between the school and parents.

We also looked at areas for development over the forthcoming academic year.  Some of these areas included helping children with language and communication difficulties, developing even more creative ways of teaching the children in all areas of the curriculum, developing a Year 2 outside creative area and developing the school website.  These are only a few of the things that are on the agenda for the forthcoming year.

We also were provided with a full report from the recent parent/guardian satisfaction survey.  178 questionnaires were returned.  A group of governors, including members of staff, has arranged to meet on a different occasion to look at and consider all your comments with a view to help us highlight any areas for improvement and act on them.  Thank you to all of you who took the time to fill them in.  We do value your input.
